The Marine industry - specifically the Oil& Gas, Shipping and Shipyard – industry are some of the most dangerous and challenging workplaces in the world today. Health Safety and Environment (HSE) departments all around the world have spent time, money and effort creating workshop and programs to eliminate these risks. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, accidents, casualties and fatalities are still being experienced.

It was a close encounter with a tragedy that caused Marine Engineer Steve Allerton, to pioneer the concept of Go Home Safe – a series of language- free animated safety training workshops designed specifically for personnel in the 0ffshore and marine industries.

“I witnessed the death of a fellow workmate on a drill ship caused by an accident which could have easily been prevented – if the right procedures had been followed I am sure this tragedy would not have happened,” he says.

“Because there were so many different nationalities, cultures and languages in the work place, I felt there was a great need to impart effective safety training in an easier way – which could break through these language and cultural barriers,” says Steve. “A language-free workshop, using 3D animation to cross all language and cultural barriers, seemed like the solution,” With the support of his family and interested friends in the industry he started to develop the language free safety awareness concept.

Steve teamed up with Captain Suresh E Abishegam a Master Mariner who is equally passionate about safety concerns and together they continued to gather the resources to develop a series of language-free safety animated DVD workshops.

These workshops were seen by key figures within the offshore and marine industries and greeted with a great deal of interest and expectation. Working with experienced HSE consultants, industry experts, technicians, engineers and the Azimation Werks animation team. The Go Home Safe - Back 2 Basics safety awareness programs evolved and have now been accepted in the Offshore and Marine industries as a practical learning tool.

“The GHS workshops use safety triggers to get the safety message across,” says Steve. “These visual methods have been proven to have a greater impact on an audience than slide presentations and verbal instruction.” Today, Go Home Safe – which began with a vision of sharing the safety message across cultures and languages – consists of a dynamic team whose mission it is to ensure the message of safety is not only heard but in this case, also seen!

“The Go Home Safe team is here to make an important difference in the workplace”, explains Captain Abishegam “Our mission is to encourage every single person in industry to Think Safe~ Work Safe & Go Home Safe!”
